Peak of the Run…..

Got a chance to head out to the Rocky on a nice Monday morning. It was very chilly in the morning so the fish did not wake up till 11 it seemed. BUT……when it finally warmed up, it was FISH ON!!!

dsc000401The fishing got hotter and hotter as the day went on . You could not ask for a better time in Ohio! I still think there are a lot of fresh fish left that have not come up yet. We shall see, it is raining ad flooded as I type this.

Winter is over and the spring run has arrived. Or has it? Winter was long and had tons of snow and ice here in Ohio. Lots of dark winter fish to be had.  That being said, where are the chromers? I think the run was delayed because of the lack of new fish. Oh well, fishing is still ok until the next rains. On a side note, I got a 32.5inch male that was an easy 12lbs.

dsc00033Not to shabby for a days work, huh? With the upcoming rains, we will see if the spring runs truly are there. If not, I think I will just cry and get out my smallmouth gear.

It is the time for renewal, fresh air, and gooooood fishing. I am lucky enough to have a dedicated fishing day so I will post with some regularity. After all, this is what I’ve been waiting for. Months of cold and ice, snow and winter is over. It is spring again!!!

This is my weather!!! 40 degrees, water coming out the sky, and plenty of fish. The morning started off very, ver slow. We saw a lot of fish in the slots and holes of Conneaut, but no takers. Then WHAMMMM. They turned on like a politition at a black tie fund raiser. I thought the skunk was on but.. perseverence and timing pays.

My Buddy Breaking the Ice!!

MY BUDDY BREAKS THE ICE  ^HERE^

Fall fishing is heating up and there are some hogs out there. The more rain we get, the better it has been. Can’t wait !!

Just got back from New York for salmon…and it was good fishing. Salmon just begun thier runs, the weather was great, and I got to relax. There were also bonus browns and rainbows in good numbers. I snagged and fair hooked my share of fish and plan on another visit in the near future. But now, it’s Ohio time!!! After last weeks rains, the run has officially kicked off. All rivers have fish in the lower ends, waiting on more precipitation. Next rain and it is on!!

Quick Fall Report

It will officially be fall next monday and the fish are getting ready. A few have shown up here and there, nothing to be excited about.  I’m heading out to NY for a quick salmon fix. Can’t wait to tangle with 20 lbs of fraight train! When I get back, Steelies will be on my mind! I also finished my website!!!! www.ohiosteelhead.info Check it out!

I Smell the Season

Its almost that time again. The leaves are turning, the air colder, and the geese are heading south. Fall is upon us and I can’t wait. A few stragglers have intered our eastern streams and the river temperatures drop day by day.  Steelhead time is right around the corner. Buttttt…. before I baptise this season, I’m heading to New York for SaMoN!!! This use to be an every year tradition, but life has dealt me a new schedual. Of well, two days is better than none!

Its Over ,Right??

Yes, in Ohio. But remember, I live in the Great Lakes region. There is always an opportunity for steelies somewhere. Right now, I’m saving my pennies for either an Indiana or a Michigan trip for SKAMANIA!!!! That right, huge summer steelies. My partner in crime and I will catch fish that average TEN POUNDS!!! The biggest I’ve seen was pushing twenty. It is exciting fishing and to do it in warm weather is a treat. As soon as the run begins, I’ll try to be there. Here is an example:Almost twenty!!

Almost Over

Well, the season is winding down and my arm hurts. We haven’t seen rain in two weeks and the rivers are clear. Most of the steelhead have done their thing and are heading out to the big lake. Most fish we caught have been dropbacks and skippers. On the good note, it is time for the lake smallmouth to make their runs. Time to tie more streamers!!

April in Ohio!!!!!!

It is on like Donkey Kong!!! The rivers are falling into shape, the time is right. FISH EVERYWHERE!! A buddy of mine and I snuck out on a beautiful dreary Sunday. Rain, snow, mist and low temps are what every steelheader waits for. Fish on the beds, fish on the drop, fish moving up. It was the right place at the right time. I ended hooking 14 fish , landing 7. My buddy hooked 13 and landed 6. This was in the matter of 3 hours!!!!! All I can say is the bead is the thing!! Ever since my dude came back from Alaska fishin’ bows, my steelhead life has never been the same. They eat the SH*T out of it. Tired arm, tired dog, what a great day.
